Abuse Addiction is probably more common than you think, especially when it is something that may be seen as socially acceptable like drinking. But that does not mean an addiction is good for you. Prolonged and constant abuse can lead to serious health problems. What is addiction and when does it become a dependency? Addiction is a condition that occurs when something becomes a habit that you find extremely hard to break. You may then develop a dependency towards your habit, needing to smoke or drink heavily, or to take drugs every day. You find you can't stop yourself even though you know what you are doing is harming you and affecting your friends and family. Chemical dependency is a chronic, progressive fatal disease which is often characterized by denial. Please review these following questions, and have a trusted family member or friend answer them on your behalf. It may be interesting to review answers from both perspectives. • Do you lose time from work due to drinking or drug use? • Is drinking or drug use making your home life unhappy? • Have you ever felt remorse after drinking or using? • Have you gotten into financial difficulties as a result of drinking or using drugs? • Do you crave a drink or drugs at a definite time daily? • Does drinking or drug use cause you to have difficulty in sleeping? • Is drinking or drug use jeopardizing your job or business? • Do you drink or use drugs to escape from worries or troubles? • Do you drink or use drugs daily? • Have you ever had a DUI, been incarcerated or hospitalized for drinking or drug related issues? If you have answered YES to any one of the questions, it's a strong indication you may be chemically dependent.
